Bench Space Again!

MORE RESEARCH IN A NUTSHELL!

This time I had a few pictures taken while we were videotaping the project. SOme people get really into the idea while others try and ignore me and the bench.

Bench Space

Research for my final project

I took a camera and took pictures of the bench, above it, and underneath it.
It is in a dog's point of view due to the height being used.
The floor is cold while the air is hot.
It is very dirty underneath.
Many people look away and don't even look at you underneath the bench.
It is very shady.
It's extremely smelly due to the cigarette smoke because of the square pot next to the bench.
Everyone avoids sitting on that bench and the other benches near it. One of the only benches that you are able to lay underneath on St. George street.
Mostly shoes, legs, dogs, birds, bike tires, and so are are available to see until you point the camera pout of the space.
It is as if the space underneath the bench has its own sight.

A New Beginning

One Step at a Time

One Step at a Time was inspired by the seemingly endless journey's up Kenan Hall. I noticed how I never grew up around stairs because my house, being a one story house, did not contain any stairs along with most of my schools. Here at Flagler, especially living in Ponce, I am somewhat forced to constantly climb stairs since I am too stubborn to be lazy and go into the elevator. In order to share this, I wanted to show myself in a different environment from the obvious Kenan Hall. Instead I chose to walk all over the stairs in Ponce, Wiley Art Building, and the Library. This gives different locations that have fewer stairs receive the same greif as Kenan's. It emphasizes my hate towards the 4th floor of Kenan along with emphasizing the use of those stairs everyday by myself as well as others. In each video that I took separate times of the day, I wore the same shoes to also show how they also are forced to make the journey throughout the day. In other words, the stairs were the focal point along with the journey they provide. If you notice, when the song begins to kick in, you see my whole body start to go up the Library stairs then it shifts in to a closer scene that shows my back. Here I used unity in order to make it like the viewer was just watching my journey and then joined it without even knowing it, following my every footstep. I also did this in many other cases by just showing my feet while dragging the viewer out again by setting the camera down, and then adding them back in again. I had also used balance which can also tie into scale by setting the camera down on the Art Buildings stairs while walking up them giving the viewer another perspective of the situation. Along with this, I had also used the principle of rhythm by providing some segments of repetition along with the music going to the beat of my walking in certain cases. Each setting was thought out with a particular variation that show a contrast throughout the design.

Make Up

Throughout a woman's life, she tends to go through a phase where she thinks that she has to wear makeup in order to be considered beautiful. In order to do so, a part of that population believe they have to paste makeup or plaster it onto their faces in order to obtain the ultimate goal of beauty. Well I'm here to tell you, you don't have to do that. This portion of my project uses a sense of rhythm in order to emphasize this quality. Here in this video you see me in super speed first looking into the camera as if it were a mirror. There I begin to rapidly plaster makeup onto my face starting out with small details that gain momentum into bigger details such as the blackening of my eyes. After it is completely covering my face and my hair is done , the video starts to recede backwards showing the makeup basically floating off of my face. This is to emphasize the quality of women constantly painting on makeup each morning, afternoon, or night for whatever reason and ending up taking it off after they are satisfied, repeating this process day in and day out like a never ending cycle. I had also emphasized this by the contrasting colors and amount of makeup that I applied to my face as if I was a professional mime, which is how I view some women's makeup at times. At times, the proportion of the space around me grow weaker because I'm constantly moving close to the camera and then receding again to give the viewers a closer look of the chaos sprouting on my face. I only show this process once because it is effective enough to give my point. I do love makeup but not enough to apply it like this.

Lights

This was the hardest idea to create. In the beginning I wanted to show how we sleep constantly in order to survive but then that transferred into the thought of turning the lights on and off doing different poses each time the light came on to show how we waste power. Here I took that idea to a whole new level. Instead, I had my roommate video tape me coming home from class emphasizing how tired I am, I walk over turning off lights, yawning, and throwing my backpack to the floor in order to turn on my flash light so I can turn off my light to lay in bed and go to sleep. I forget to turn off the flashlight and it remains on while slowly, all of the other sources of lights surrounding me turn on one by one showing this very act in wasting power. It was hard to get all the lights into the frame and show how bright it kept getting so this took many takes like the hair video. But here I believe in all, it demonstrated this very idea by not only emphasizing the waste in power but by also executing it in its own perspective. This is shown through the constant movement caused by the panning of the room and the angles of me and the objects consuming the small space. The lights burn brighter in that space in order to show you that they are there even when we don't notice them. They contrast the darkness of the room giving me light instead of darkness. In the end it all balances with the different lights all showing up around me. I just stopped it there rather than turning off the lights because we waste power constantly without knowing it so it had to stay that way.

Hair

This was a very different concept compared to the rest of this project. I had thought about how people are constantly complimenting my hair whether I had done anything to it that morning or not. Here I took that ideal and twisted it around to give it a whole new sense and meaning. I wanted to show myself with different hairstyles to see if the viewers still think that. In order to post this question in their minds, I had placed a sign in the background to ask them the question, "Still think my hairs beautiful?" I had used perspective by showing just my head as though the camera was the mirror almost looking up to see what sort of hairstyle I have in store for it. From there I put a lot of time and effort into creating about 9 different, crazy looking hairstyles that slowly move above my head and surprise me. First off, I balanced the scene out by putting the light in the picture to balance out both sides since my sign was on the other side of me, placing myself into the middle. I also place emphasis into the picture by the many different hairstyles and the way I act. I act all goofy and "into character" every time a new hairdo is placed on my head to emphasize the crazy hairdo more and emphasize the fact that people always act and feel different when dressed up as someone else or have a different style than the day before, while in reality they are just the same person as yesterday. That is why I over-act differently to each paper wig as if I was a different person while outdoing it to show that I'm really not. Looking at the hairstyles, I use contrasting styles and colors to make them stand out along with my personalities as well as emphasizing the very characters themselves. This all comes together in unity creating the same effect.

The Art of Mastication

The Art of Mastication is simply the art of chewing with your teeth. Honestly, I have thought about the pattern of us eating day in and day out over and over and noticed how I never really think about it. It's just a habit that keeps us alive. In order to show this properly I had come up with the idea of showing just my mouth chewing and swallowing the food simultaneously up close like the lips in The Rocky Horror Picture Show. This emphasizes the pattern of our eating habits day in and day out while also showing our great need for it. I had also used scale as well as proportion in order to carry these ideas effectively which is shown through the close up of my lips, nose, food, and teeth. Along with this, I had pasted chewing and slurping sounds to the film to give the viewer an even closer picture that they probably prefer not to see. This also gives it a sense of rhythm. If you look real closely I am also eating many different things to also give the sense of it occurring multiple times a day.
These foods include:
*Carrots
*Pita chips with humus
*Black Bean Soup
*An Apple
* Rice Crispy Treats
*Froot Loops
*Bread
*Part of an Omelet
*French Fries
*Cake
*Drinking Water
*etc..
all in one sitting.
